As an inspector, one has to know a great deal about the entire building envelope as well as the external conditions that will affect the structure itself.
This isn't something a person "just picks up" along the way. It takes years of experience in construction, electrical or plumbing trades. Or some similar type of exposure to all the components and their interaction with each other that make up a structure.
I have such experience and have trained under two Master Inspectors for many months. I further undertake training constantly. There is a tremendous amount an inspector must understand to be good at it.
